Applications : Writer - Table Of Contents

Creating the Table

Goto page 2 and Click underneath the text Table Of Contents, then on the Menu Bar Click on Insert»Table Of Contents and Index »Table Of Contents.

You can also do your headers and footers and page numbers from the Insert menu, but its a long way down!!

Insert Table of Contents

You now get an overview of a typical Table Of Contents, leaving everything at its default settings Click OK to create the table.

Table of Contents Properties

Writer picks up on all the Headings and produces a Table Of Contents. Hold down the Ctrl Key and Click on any of the Headings in that table to jump to that part of the document. Writer also puts a title on the Table Of Contents so Delete your text Table Of Contents.

Click on the Print Preview Icon to see what this Table of Contents looks like on a Printed Page.

To get out of Print Preview hit the Esc key or Click on the Close Preview icon

Great but not perfect, it would be nice if the actual content of this document started on Page One and we need to lose the Header and Footer on the Title Page and the Table Of Contents Page.

Goto Page One (Ctrl+Home for the start of a document)   and On the Menu Bar Click Format»Title Page and in the Title Page Box Choose to Convert Existing Pages to Title Pages and hit the + to change the number of Title Pages from 1 to 2.

Tick the Reset page numbering after title pages box and set the page number as 1, then Click OK.

Now the Title Page and Table Of Contents page have no Header and Footer, scroll down to Page 3, our Content Page, and in the Footer the page number now is Page 1.

Pages in the Footer are now numbered from 1 to 6, however the Table Of Contents still refer to the old page numbers so Right Click on the Table Of Contents and Click Update Index

Update Table Of Contents

There are only six pages of content in this document and our Table of Contents would look better if we space out the entries so Right Click on one of the Headings 1 entries and Point to Paragraph»Edit Styles and in the Paragraph Style: Contents 1 Box on the Indents & Spacing Tab change the spacing above and below paragraphs from 0.00cm to 0.20cm (Click on the + icon).

Right Click on any of the Headings 2 Entries this time a Paragraph Style: Contents 2 Box opens and give these headings the same spacings above and below.

The Finished Table Of Contents, now to jump to Page 2 Lists, Hold down the Control Key and Click on Lists...
